Good oral health is fundamental for overall health and well-being. When oral health care is delayed, it can lead to unhealthy mouth and oral diseases. There are major barriers to accessing dental treatment, including high cost, lack of accessible dental services in the community, geographic isolation, fear and anxiety, and other social and economic factors, especially among poor and rural communities. Our program will provide dental services, education, and referral services to over 1,200 Northern New Mexico residents. The program is on-going in the community with over 260 dentist and hygienist volunteers throughout the state.

Reading Quest

All of the students we serve are referred by their classroom teachers as being a year or more below grade level in reading proficiency. Many of the students we serve are English Language Learners and have learning differences and/or identified learning disabilities. 95% of the students we serve receive free and reduced lunch at school, and some students are referred by the Adelante program for homeless families. Reading is Magic creates an individualized reading program for each child that is supported by a wide range of hands-on activities and intensive phonics training.

Literacy Link-Leamos

Learning English is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty. Problems from low literacy include the inability to qualify for jobs and the struggle to function in today’s society. The goal of the Let’s Read project is to influence children to become lifetime readers by providing the supplemental educational support of new, age-appropriate books in the home. We give ten to twelve books annually to each of the 2,000 elementary school children in the nine public elementary schools in Grant County.

Our Passport to Trails program introduces outdoor learning, exercise and nature study to fourth and fifth graders from predominantly Spanish-speaking public schools on Santa Fe’s south side. On the hikes, students learn to read maps, estimate distances and gain confidence with being in nature. They also learn about the history of the land and the trails, the flora and fauna of the area, how to be outdoors safely and responsibly, and where to hike so that they can continue to enjoy the trails on their own with their families.

Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe

Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe’s mission is to provide free tutoring to adults in reading, writing, and speaking English to strengthen our community, families, and the workforce. Our vision is a literate, thriving community where words can be read, written, spoken, and understood, and where people can attain their goals and fully participate in society. With our Workplace Tutoring Program, volunteer tutors go to hotels, restaurants, and other workplaces throughout Santa Fe to teach small groups of employees English as a Second Language or basic literacy. The program operates year-round.

Working lands constitute our best tools for maintaining healthy watersheds, fostering biodiversity, and sequestering carbon. The challenges that face ranching and farming in the US demonstrate a need to attract, train, and empower a network of working land stewards to manage more than 700 million US acres. Through education, innovation, and collaboration, Quivira works in coalition with ranchers, farmers, government agencies, tribal entities, and land stewards to foster resilience on dry working lands.
