Paws and Stripes began in 2010 with volunteers. Today P&S is 19 staff strong, and in a permanent home just a couple of miles down from the state’s only Veterans Hospital. Our mission is to provide animal-assisted therapy and other mental health services to disabled military veterans and their families living with service-connected trauma and suicidality. It is well known that the high rate of Veteran suicides in this country, yet it’s not just a Veteran problem. New Mexico has the second highest rate of suicide in the nation. Our “Suicide Prevention Education” training is available at no cost to the community.

Rebuilding Together Sandoval County, Inc. (RTSD)
Bernalillo, New Mexico / $10,000

Our mission is to prevent sexual violence and empower survivors of sexual violence and other violent crimes by restoring dignity, strengthRTSC has been dedicated to creating a safer and healthier future for community members who cannot afford to pay for necessary home repairs for more than 23 years. Since its inception in 1999, RTSC has completed over 350 home repair projects. Over 90% of repair projects are performed on minority-owned households. Low-income families often cannot afford to make necessary home repairs, as their financial resources are already stretched thin, paying for necessities such as food, medication, and utilities. Households must meet the current Federal guidelines for very low income established by HUD to qualify for assistance.

New Mexico Schools for the Arts (NMSA)
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $20,000

While talent is evenly distributed, opportunity is not. NMSA, however, offers access to a rigorous mastery of arts and academic curriculum for students from across the state without regard to prior art training. Pairing rigorous academics with an immersive arts education gives our students an edge, and research has long highlighted what we know and see daily - integrating arts and academics amplifies student achievement. NMSA’s graduation rate (97%), retention rate (95%), and college placement rates (100%) all far exceed state and national outcomes. NMSA is a public tuition-free charter school serving promising artist scholars from across the state.

Resolve
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $10,000

Resolve’s misión is to prevent violence by building skills and inspiring individuals to be agents of personal, community, and cultural change. By reducing the fear and impact of violence, we help create a community where people live powerfully, experience freedom and pursue joy. Resolve reaches individuals and communities through partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and community groups, as well as classes for the public. In 2022, we served over 3,000 individuals, the majority of whom received multiple hours of programming. Resolve’s evidence-based programs will reduce incidents of violence and help individuals and communities heal from the effects of past violence.

New Mexico Wildlife Federation (NMWF)
Albuquerque, New Mexico / $25,000

Since 1914, the Federation has advocated for sound wildlife management, access to public lands, protection of our waters, and providing opportunities to pursue the outdoor traditions that helped make America what it is today. New Mexico has been especially affected by climate change due to access to water, annual wildfires, and the resulting impacts to our agricultural industries. The NMWF proposes to utilize their strong voice to shape the dialog through innovative, culturally relevant, and education beginning with our youngest residents and engaging local elders in the community in a multigenerational climate awareness project.

Queen Bee Music Association
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $3,000

According to musician Byan Tuk, “playing a musical instrument in a group engages more regions of the brain simultaneously than any other activity.” Yet, access to music education and experiences is very limited. Queen Bee Music Association believes everyone can be a musician, regardless of age, aspiration, ability, or socio-economic background. Our Community Programs bring music education and experiences to more than 3,000 New Mexicans each year at no cost to participants. In 2024, our Community Programs will provide more than 3,000 New Mexicans each year at no cost to participants.
