Audubon Southwest has been providing nature education to Santa Fe youth for over 25 years. Spending time and playing outdoors provides many benefits for children, such as improving problem-solving, emotional resilience, extended focus, and gross motor skills. Two of Audubon’s primary goals are to help historically excluded communities feel safe and provide equitable access to the benefits of outdoor learning. Through field trips, teacher trainings, STEM lesson plans, and material kits, Audubon endeavors to support science education in Santa Fe schools by providing continued points of contact with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.

Deming Animal Guardians

Animal shelters throughout the US are overcrowded. While our shelter is a “limited admission shelter” (meaning we can turn away animals when space is insufficient), some of our animals remain for long periods due to behavioral problems, which adds to the overcrowding situation. Expanding this program and our shelter was invited to participate. With the assistance of a new program, our goal is to better train our sheltered dogs to be socialized for more successful adoption. Up to 50 dogs can go through this training program each year.

Communities in Schools (CISNM)

All of the students served by Communities in Schools of New Mexico live in poverty and are statistically five times more likely to drop out of school. Many may arrive hungry, poorly clothed, or traumatized, but are still expected to engage and learn. Schools are not able to effectively provide the complex support these particular students need without community involvement. CISNM places full-term, bilingual site coordinators into the schools to provide resources, guidance and support, helping to ensure that these students have what they need to succeed, regardless of the socio-economic status of their family.
